Return to The Divine Office: A Suite for Handbells, 4 oct.

6. Compline

from The Divine Office: A Suite for Handbells

4 oct., optional 3 oct. chimes. The introduction in Compline showcases motifs from all previous movements and ties them all together. It portrays tired minds drifting, as people reflect on their busy day, while preparing for worship. The service commences with a call and response, as the clergy chants and congregation answers. The melody for this chant is an original tune, but inspired by “Into your hands, I commend my spirit,” a text often used in Compline. The congregational response interweaves my original chant melody with the lovely, timeless Tallis Canon (All Praise to You, My God This Night). It culminates with a brief hint of Veni Creator from Vespers. Compline is the 6th and closing movement of the suite. Lvl. 3+.  Cat. no. 4T6.

The Divine Office: A Suite for Handbells is an original programatic composition, commissioned by Paul Kingsbury for the Ringers of Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, PA. The suite illustrates both the 8 services in the Breviary and scenes from medieval life. Initially written for Petit & Fritsen bells, cue notes have been added to adapt it to regular handbells. All 6 compatible movements may be performed as separate works.
